Overview
- Reports on Friday say La Gazzetta dello Sport has informed the FIGC that Nicolò Tresoldi has accepted Roberto Mancini’s invitation to represent Italy and that the federation has lodged a formal FIFA one-time change request.
- Tresoldi was born in Cagliari, moved to Germany as a teenager, has 24 Germany U21 caps with 12 goals, and has started the 2026–27 club season strongly for Club Brugge, which underpins Italy’s interest.
- Italy aims to secure FIFA approval before an expected squad announcement around September 18 so Tresoldi could be considered for Nations League fixtures against Belgium, Turkey and France in late September and early October.
- La Gazzetta dello Sport also reports that Cagliari midfielder Alessandro Romano has agreed to switch his international allegiance to Italy and that Udinese defender Matteo Palma is a further target for Mancini’s wider rebuild.
- Under FIFA’s Article 10 one-time change rule, youth appearances do not block a switch but the choice becomes permanent once a player appears in a senior competitive match for the new association.
