Trainee Driver Was at Wheel in Haveri KSRTC Bus Crash That Killed Toddler

Police say a mistaken pedal press may explain how the bus surged onto the platform.

Overview

  • The KSRTC bus that mounted Platform No. 2 at the Haveri bus stand Wednesday morning killed two-and-a-half-year-old Hazrat Ali and injured four people.
  • Police said a trainee was driving the bus and a preliminary inquiry suggests the driver may have hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
  • The child was moved from the district hospital to KMCRI in Hubballi and died around 9:02 am, while the other injured received treatment and were later discharged.
  • Traffic police registered a case against driver Manjunath R under sections 281 and 125(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and a departmental inquiry has begun.
  • The bus, registration KA-27/F-0665, was being parked before a Haveri–Lakshmeshwar trip when it surged forward, a scenario that could prompt closer reviews of driver training and bus-stand safety.
