TRAI Opens V2X Consultation, Backed by 30 MHz in 5.9 GHz Band

The plan sets a path to cut road deaths by using cellular links for real-time car-to-roadside alerts.

Overview

  • The telecom regulator released the consultation paper Thursday, inviting comments by May 28 and counter-comments by June 11 to shape rules for vehicle-to-everything communication.
  • DoT has given in-principle support for cellular V2X and identified 30 MHz at 5875–5905 MHz for the initial rollout, with another 20 MHz at 5905–5925 MHz held for future intelligent transport uses.
  • TRAI proposes licence-exempt on-board units in vehicles and formal authorisation for roadside units, positioning existing 4G and 5G networks as the backbone for connectivity.
  • The paper cites public-safety goals as the driver, noting about 92% of crashes involve human error and warning that V2X needs a public key infrastructure to block spoofed alerts and safeguards to prevent tracking.
  • A phased deployment is urged to handle interoperability and legacy vehicles, with experts pointing to expressways as early test beds and 2022 pilots showing faster ambulance movement and shorter bus waits at signals.
