Traffic Reopens on MumbaiPune Expressway After 33-Hour Propylene Tanker Leak

An FIR names the driver for negligent driving, with a state inquiry to examine emergency readiness.

Overview

  • Authorities resumed Mumbai-bound movement around 1:46–2:00 am Thursday after teams decanted the gas and removed the overturned tanker near the Adoshi tunnel.
  • Specialist crews from NDRF, SDRF and BPCL reduced internal pressure from about 8 to 2 psig, sealed multiple valve cracks and transferred the remaining propylene before lifting the vehicle.
  • The shutdown produced queues up to roughly 20 km and left thousands without food, water or toilets, as tolls were suspended and 139 MSRTC bus services were cancelled.
  • Khopoli police registered an FIR naming driver Ratan Singh, alleging rash, high-speed driving on the ghat slope; he sustained injuries and exited the vehicle with a co-worker.
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry and directed MSRDC to submit recommendations, as officials faced scrutiny over diversions, relief measures and on-route preparedness.
