Toyota LandCruiser FJ Tipped for 2029 HiLux Diesel, Reviving Australian Possibility
Toyota Australia says it would revisit the model only with a Euro 6–compliant powertrain that meets local rules.
Overview
- Japanese outlet Best Car reports the compact LandCruiser FJ will gain Toyota’s 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel in 2029, the unit used in HiLux and Prado.
- The reported diesel produces about 150kW and 500Nm in those models, a substantial jump over the FJ’s current 2.7-litre petrol rated at roughly 120kW and 246Nm.
- Toyota has not confirmed the diesel plan, and Toyota Australia maintains it has no current plans to introduce the FJ locally.
- Any Australian bid would depend on Euro 6d emissions compliance plus meeting the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, with tightening CO2 targets reaching 110g/km in 2029.
- Local entry would also require passing Australia’s crash and child-seat rules, and the Thai-built IMV platform link with HiLux underpins the technical plausibility despite earlier 2.4-litre diesel rumours.
