Toyota and Hyroad Finalize Deal to Deploy 40 Hydrogen Semi Trucks in Southern California

The tie-up gives Toyota a near-term test bed for its hydrogen supply network in a freight-heavy corridor.

Overview

  • Toyota Motor North America and Hyroad Energy announced Monday at ACT Expo in Las Vegas a definitive agreement to put 40 fuel-cell Class 8 semi trucks to work in Toyota’s Southern California logistics fleet.
  • Hyroad will supply the vehicles along with maintenance, telematics, and software support, while Toyota will provide hydrogen from a refueling site under development in Ontario, California.
  • The new Ontario fueling hub, unveiled as part of the ACT Expo rollout, is expected to begin operations in early 2027 to anchor fuel supply for the pilot fleet.
  • Hyroad’s trucks and service tools draw on 117 vehicles, parts, software, and IP it bought from Nikola’s 2025 bankruptcy auction, and the company offers a bundled lease model that removes large upfront costs for fleets.
  • Toyota cites fast 15–20 minute refueling, roughly 500 miles of range, and only water vapor at the tailpipe, while some coverage questions hydrogen’s edge as battery-electric trucks gain range, cut weight, and charge faster.
