Tourist Damages Hopi Headpiece at Grand Canyon’s Desert View Watchtower

The damaged Fred Kabotie headpiece is a loss to Hopi cultural heritage and has prompted rangers to seek public tips to identify the visitors.

Overview

  • Park officials say a man climbing onto handcrafted furniture inside the Desert View Watchtower knocked over a Hopi headpiece on June 17 after the chair tipped beneath him.
  • The headpiece, made by noted Hopi artist Fred Kabotie, broke in two places and sustained other scuffs and tears and has been secured by Grand Canyon National Park museum staff.
  • Rangers describe the man as a white male in his 60s or 70s, about 6 feet tall with white or gray hair, and a female companion in her late 30s or 40s; both left before law enforcement could identify them.
  • Investigators are asking anyone who was at the watchtower between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. that day to review photos and send tips to GRCA_Information@nps.gov rather than posting names online.
  • Park officials stress that Desert View Watchtower houses irreplaceable Native American art and that the incident highlights the need for careful display, culturally informed restoration, and clearer visitor safeguards.
