TotalEnergies Extends Voluntary Fuel Price Cap Across Its French Network for June

Tapping the group's refining margins to cap pump prices, the measure eases costs for drivers, risks regulator complaints, possible tax scrutiny.

Overview

  • TotalEnergies announced on Wednesday that it will keep a voluntary price cap in place for June at 1.99 euros per litre for petrol and 2.25 euros per litre for diesel across about 3,300 stations.
  • The company also said it will run four 'prix unique' weekend promotions with diesel cut to 2.09 euros per litre on 30–31 May and 20–21 June and pledged to pass on any immediate falls in wholesale prices.
  • Economy Minister Roland Lescure publicly welcomed the move as helpful to consumers while saying the parliamentary debate on taxing extra industry profits remains possible.
  • The federation representing independent service stations said it will refer Total to the Autorité de la concurrence for alleged abuse of a dominant position, arguing independents cannot match the company’s price flexibility.
  • Pump prices rose sharply in May because of supply disruptions tied to the Middle East, and Total’s integrated refining activity gives it margin flexibility that eases consumer pain but raises questions about competition and future fiscal or regulatory responses.
