Total Lunar Eclipse on March 3 Centers Over Pacific With Red ‘Blood Moon’ on View

The event marks the year’s lone total lunar eclipse, the last such display until late 2028.

Overview

  • The Moon enters Earth’s shadow from 08:42 to 14:24 UT, with totality expected about 11:03–12:02 UT and partial phases from 09:49 to 13:17 UT.
  • Totality favors New Zealand, eastern Australia and the western United States, with broader partial views across much of the Pacific‑rim regions.
  • No eclipse will be visible from the UK, with Europe and Africa also out of view during the event.
  • In India the eclipse is chiefly partial, with the penumbral phase from 02:14 PM to 07:53 PM IST and New Delhi’s partial view roughly 6:27–7:53 PM IST; cities include New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
  • The reddish hue arises as Earth’s atmosphere refracts sunlight into the umbra, and the spectacle is safe to watch with the naked eye, though binoculars enhance color and detail.
