Torrential Rain Washes Out Roads Across Central New Hampshire

Crews are assessing flood damage, with officials warning drivers to avoid barricaded roads.

Overview

  • Overnight heavy rain produced flash flooding that washed out and closed multiple local and state roads in Carroll County, with the worst downpours concentrated in and around Madison.
  • The heaviest rain fell late Wednesday night into early Thursday, and spotter reports show many locations received roughly 3 to 5 inches of rain and some towns logged more than 5 inches.
  • Madison Police said Public Works, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and Madison Fire and Rescue are on scene assessing damage and enforcing barricades on streets such as Village Road at Forest Pines, Modoc Hill, Colby Hill Road, East Madison Road and sections of Route 113.
  • River gauges recorded a notable overnight rise on the Saco River but it stayed below minor flood stage, and most damage and washouts occurred at smaller streams, brooks and low-lying road crossings.
  • Closures will remain until on-site inspections are complete and repairs are made, and residents should expect travel disruption, follow official updates, and never drive through barricaded or high-water roadways.
