Overview
- A three-way deal announced Monday puts about $3 billion on the table for the Waterfront East LRT, with Ottawa, Ontario and Toronto each pledging roughly one-third.
- The city will deliver the 3.8-kilometre surface line with the TTC, linking Union Station to the Port Lands on a dedicated route along Queens Quay East, Cherry Street and Commissioners Street.
- City estimates point to service for up to 150,000 residents and workers with about 50,000 daily riders once the area is built out.
- Backed by the wider $8.8 billion Canada–Ontario Partnership to Build, the funding ties transit to housing moves such as lower development charges and HST rebates.
- The project, approved in 2018, now moves from years of design and prep work—including the Keating Channel bridge and a Queen’s Quay East realignment—toward procurement and construction planning.
