Tornadoes Kill at Least 8 in Michigan and Oklahoma as More Storms Threaten

NOAA data show Michigan just suffered its deadliest tornado day in 46 years.

Overview

  • In south central Michigan, three people were killed and 12 injured around Union Lake and Union City, and one person was killed in Edwardsburg in Cass County, according to local officials.
  • Officials in Oklahoma reported two deaths in Beggs in Okmulgee County and two in Major County, and Governor Kevin Stitt declared a state of emergency for eight counties to speed support.
  • Multiple strong tornadoes in Michigan destroyed homes and businesses, tore down trees and power lines, and tossed vehicles as damage surveys and rescue checks continued.
  • The National Weather Service warned of additional thunderstorms and flash flooding from the Great Lakes to Texas with a smaller chance of more tornadoes as the system tracks east.
