Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Watches Posted Across Upper Midwest as Flash Flood Risk Intensifies
A warm front tapping rich Gulf moisture is driving supercells over saturated ground.
Overview
- SPC issued Tornado Watch 103 Monday afternoon for northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, central Wisconsin and Lake Michigan, warning of a few tornadoes with a couple possibly strong, hail up to 3 inches, and wind gusts to 70 mph.
- Later Monday, SPC added Severe Thunderstorm Watch 104 for northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota, citing likely large hail up to 2.5 inches, damaging winds, and a possible tornado or two.
- WPC warned that storms riding the warm front across much of Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will train over the same areas and likely trigger flash flooding on already saturated soils.
- SPC mesoscale discussions signaled a growing severe threat along the warm front with supercells possible and very large hail in parts of Nebraska and South Dakota, while dryline storms in Texas and Oklahoma could also produce very large hail if they form.
- ‘Watch’ means conditions favor severe weather, so communities in the listed areas could see storms build quickly through the evening with large hail, sudden flooding and dangerous winds that disrupt travel and outdoor plans.
