Torino Oust Roma 3-2 in Coppa Italia as 16-Year-Old Arena Scores on Debut

Gasperini cast the defeat as a step in Roma’s youth development.

Overview

  • Che Adams scored twice for Torino, Mario Hermoso equalised early in the second half, debutant Antonio Arena levelled with his first touch, and Emirhan Ilkhan won it in the 90th minute after Mile Svilar spilled a corner.
  • Torino advance to the quarter-finals to face Inter on February 4, ending Roma’s cup run in the round of 16.
  • Sydney-born Arena has represented Australia and Italy at youth level, became the third-youngest scorer in Roma history, and Opta reported he is the only 2009-born player at a top-five-league club to score this season in all competitions.
  • Gian Piero Gasperini said he was not disappointed by the exit, declined to blame any individual for the goals conceded, and praised Arena’s physicality and mentality.
  • Roma fielded a rotated side for the tie, and the clubs are set for a quick rematch in Serie A in Turin on Sunday.
