Torino Appoints Ignazio Abate as Head Coach Through 2028

A former Milan player who led Juve Stabia to a Serie B play-off semi-final will start on July 1 under a two-year contract.

Overview

  • Torino confirmed on Friday that Ignazio Abate will take charge of the first team from July 1, 2026, on a contract running until June 30, 2028.
  • Club president Urbano Cairo and sporting director Gianluca Petrachi held internal meetings in early June before naming Abate, and journalist Fabrizio Romano was among the first to report the decision.
  • Abate moves up from coaching in AC Milan’s youth setup and a successful 2025–26 season at Juve Stabia, where he reached the Serie B play-off semi-final before losing to Monza.
  • The appointment replaces Roberto D’Aversa, gives Abate his first Serie A head-coaching role, and stands out because two-year deals are relatively long in Italian football where tenures are often short.
  • Torino considered other candidates, including Alberto Aquilani who instead joined Sassuolo, and the club’s existing commercial partnership with Swiss Web3 firm YouHodler continues but is not linked to the coaching change.
