Tom Holland Says He Persuaded Sony to Delay Spider-Man So He Could Join Nolan’s The Odyssey

The scheduling change created extra development time that helped Spider-Man: Brand New Day hire director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Overview

  • Holland told GQ this week that he called Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman to ask that Spider-Man: Brand New Day be pushed back so he could film Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
  • Sony agreed in part because Nolan has a reputation for tight, on-time shoots, and The Odyssey began on schedule and wrapped nine days early, according to Holland’s account.
  • The delay gave Marvel/Sony roughly six months of breathing room that, Holland says, allowed the production to bring in Destin Daniel Cretton and to revise the script before principal photography.
  • Holland says watching Nolan’s meticulous prep led him to push Spider-Man’s producers to lock more preproduction work and avoid improvising scenes on set.
  • Industry pieces note that The Odyssey’s IMAX-first shoot, Nolan’s track record, and its ensemble cast have analysts speculating it could be a major global box-office contender, though that outcome remains unconfirmed.
