Tom Brady Says He Asked NFL About Playing Again, Was Rebuffed

League rules forbid active players from owning team equity.

Overview

  • Brady, in a CNBC interview Thursday, said he asked the NFL about returning as a player while holding a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders and was told the league did not like the idea.
  • An NFL spokesperson told CNBC he would need to divest his Raiders stake before signing with any team under a 2023 policy that bars players or team employees from holding club equity.
  • The league also warned that a player-owner arrangement would trigger salary-cap complications that teams would need to account for.
  • Brady said he is very happily retired after taking part in the March 21 Fanatics Flag Football Classic in Los Angeles, which he said reconfirmed his decision to stay off the field.
  • He owns a 5% share of the Raiders approved in late 2024 and says he serves in a strategic advisory role without daily duties, alongside his job as Fox’s lead NFL analyst.
