Toledo Reopens La Vega After €3.2M EU‑Funded Overhaul

Overview

  • The park reopened to the public this weekend with a program of concerts, guided visits and the 48th Carrera Pedestre, and several long‑standing vendors including Julián Jiménez have resumed service.
  • A new Paseo Imperial now frames the main access to the Casco Histórico and features six restored stone statues of Visigothic and medieval kings returned to a single monumental axis.
  • Works replaced water and sanitation networks, buried electrical lines, installed telematic irrigation, upgraded LED lighting, added more than 200 plantings and created routes adapted for people with reduced mobility and visual impairment.
  • Vehicle traffic on adjacent streets will resume on Monday under new rules that ban vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (public transport exempt) and use movable bollards to allow timed pedestrian closures, while the Casa de Corcho stays closed after a May fire and will reopen later.
  • The project has reignited a public dispute between PP and PSOE over who planned and executed the scheme and left some century‑old kiosk owners outside the new concessions because they declined the municipal fees.
