Overview
- A federal grand jury indicted Shannon Mathre, 33, of Toledo, for allegedly threatening to kill Vice President JD Vance during Vance’s January visit to northwest Ohio, including a statement about using an M14-style gun.
- Prosecutors also charged Mathre with receipt and distribution of child sexual abuse material under federal law after agents found multiple digital files during the threat investigation.
- The CSAM conduct is alleged to have occurred between Dec. 31, 2025, and Jan. 21, 2026, according to the indictment.
- U.S. Secret Service agents arrested Mathre on Feb. 6; he made an initial appearance the same day before a U.S. magistrate judge and is being held until the detention hearing on Feb. 11.
- If convicted, Mathre faces up to five years in prison for the threat charge and up to 20 years for the CSAM charge, as well as fines, and authorities note the indictment is an allegation and he is presumed innocent.
