Overview
- The fire, which on Friday had burned roughly 6,147 acres and was about 29% contained, continues to show the most activity on its eastern flank as it slowly backs toward the South Fork of the Big Sur River while remaining south of the river.
- Firefighters have focused recent efforts on strengthening containment and contingency lines on the coastal side and eastern areas, using helicopters for water and retardant drops and removing hose where lines are secure.
- Highway 1 remains closed between about Mile Marker 42.6 and Mile Marker 37 while agencies assess loose rock and other safety risks and work to restore safe access for residents and responders.
- Evacuation orders remain in effect for zones MRY-F027-B and MRY-F028-A with multiple other Monterey County zones under evacuation warnings, and the Carmel Middle School shelter has closed as evacuees were relocated nearer to home.
- No structures have been reported lost, though CAL FIRE lists roughly 503 structures threatened, the cause remains under investigation, and roughly 1,600–2,000 personnel and many engines, crews, helicopters and dozers remain assigned to protection and suppression work.
