Timber Fire Grows to 4,245 Acres and Shuts About 10 Miles of Highway 1 in Big Sur

Low containment and steep, dry ridgelines that have grounded aircraft are forcing more than 1,400 firefighters to concentrate on protecting over 500 threatened structures and keeping evacuation zones in place.

Overview

  • The fire has expanded to roughly 4,245 acres with containment around 7 percent, and officials say the cause remains under investigation.
  • California Highway Patrol has closed about a 10-mile stretch of State Route 1, and Monterey County has issued multiple evacuation orders and warnings with an evacuation shelter at Carmel Middle School.
  • Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service report more than 1,400 personnel, dozens of engines, hand crews, dozers and helicopters are assigned, with crews building direct lines and protecting homes along the Highway 1 corridor.
  • Firefighters are hampered by steep, rugged terrain and a split weather profile that leaves lower elevations damp under a marine layer while higher ridges stay dry, and recent thunderstorms and lightning have temporarily grounded air tankers and created spot-fire risks.
