Tigress Tara Enters Sahyadri Core Forest After Soft Release

The move under Maharashtra’s TARA programme adds a breeding-age female to Sahyadri with round-the-clock collar tracking.

Overview

  • Tara (STR-05), translocated from Tadoba on December 9, exited the Chandoli soft-release enclosure and entered the core forest on the morning of December 18.
  • Forest officials say Tara displayed strong wild instincts during acclimatisation, including making a kill inside the enclosure and feeding for several days.
  • Two introduced tigresses—Tara and Chanda (STR-04, released November 20)—now occupy the Sahyadri core, enhancing prospects for breeding.
  • Both tigresses are fitted with radio collars for continuous satellite and VHF monitoring to support safe integration.
  • Post-release oversight includes patrol-based triangulation, behavioural documentation, conflict-avoidance work with communities, and veterinary response readiness, with officials citing goals for biodiversity gains and sustainable tourism.
