Tigers Recall Zack Short, Option Jace Jung and Designate Grant Holman

The move signals Detroit's need for shortstop depth.

Overview

  • Detroit selected utility infielder Zack Short to the MLB roster Sunday, optioned Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo, and designated right-hander Grant Holman for assignment to open a 40-man spot.
  • Manager A.J. Hinch said tests on Gleyber Torres’ left side were encouraging and that Torres is day-to-day, so Short’s call-up was not tied to an injured list move.
  • The staff wanted an extra true shortstop for matchups and coverage, with three Texas lefty relievers in play Sunday and Kevin McGonigle slated for an off day Monday, and Hinch said Short will handle shortstop when McGonigle sits.
  • The club has been thin up the middle because Zach McKinstry and Javier Báez are hurt in Detroit and Trei Cruz is out at Toledo, though McKinstry could return soon and that could squeeze Short’s spot.
  • Short rejoined Detroit on Friday in a trade with the Nationals for cash or a player to be named later, played one game for Toledo, and returns as a familiar, versatile defender who previously spent 2021–23 with the Tigers.
