Overview
- The Tigers announced Friday that Casey Mize was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to May 28 for right adductor inflammation and he is not eligible to return until June 12.
- Detroit activated right-hander Beau Brieske from the 60-day injured list on May 29 to fill Mize’s active roster spot and give the club a multi-inning relief option with prior experience as an opener.
- Left-hander Brant Hurter was transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL with lumbar spine inflammation and the team expects him to be out roughly until July 22 after a shutdown and throw-back progression.
- The moves widen an already-stretched staff that has also lost Tarik Skubal to recent elbow surgery and closer Kenley Jansen to the IL, forcing rotation and bullpen reshuffling with probable starts penciled for Troy Melton, Framber Valdez and Keider Montero.
- Mize had been one of Detroit’s best starters this season with a 2.27 ERA and a 0.965 WHIP through nine starts so his absence raises the risk of further bullpen overuse and makes Brieske’s short-term role and workload a key thing to watch.
