Overview
- On Monday, TIFF released the bulk of its 51st edition Gala and Special Presentations lineup, naming roughly 64–66 titles including world premieres such as Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky and Chris Rock’s Misty Green plus Siân Heder’s Being Heumann as opening night and Yan Lanouette Turgeon’s Villeneuve as closing night.
- On Tuesday, TIFF expanded its Platform programme back to 12 films and named Miwa Nishikawa’s Children Untold as the section’s opening film, with entries from filmmakers including Nyla Innuksuk, Amanda Kernell and John Trengove.
- Under a new Academy rule, the winner of TIFF’s Platform jury prize will automatically qualify for consideration in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category if the film is more than 50% in a language other than English, changing how international filmmakers may use the festival to reach the Academy.
- TIFF will run Sept. 10–20 and is launching its inaugural industry marketplace, TIFF: The Market, Sept. 10–16 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to expand opportunities for sales, distribution deals and financing during the festival.
- The announced slate includes a notable Canadian presence—eight Gala and Special Presentations list Canada as a production country—and the combined programming, Platform change, and market launch sharpen TIFF’s influence on awards momentum and film commerce heading into the fall festival season.
