TIFF to Stage Full Christopher Nolan Retrospective at the Lightbox

The summer series will show Nolan’s complete 12‑film catalogue on 35mm and 70mm as a lead‑in to his new feature’s July release.

Overview

  • TIFF announced in late May that “Christopher Nolan: Grand Designs” will run at the Lightbox from July 8 to August 20 and present every feature Nolan has directed on 35mm and 70mm film.
  • The retrospective is timed to coincide with Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, which is scheduled to open in mid‑July and the festival says the series will help build public engagement ahead of that release.
  • TIFF will stage event programming around screenings, including a live recording of The Ringer/Spotify podcast The Big Picture, a Silver Screenings talk tied to The Right Stuff, a pop‑up planetarium activation, and a “Quote Along” Barbie screening before Oppenheimer.
  • Several titles are earmarked for 70mm presentations such as Dunkirk, Interstellar and Oppenheimer, reflecting Nolan’s long‑standing preference for analogue and large‑format exhibition; reports say Nolan is not expected to attend the Lightbox series in person.
  • The programme closes a loop with Nolan’s TIFF origins—his debut Following screened there in 1998—and gives Toronto audiences a rare chance to see his full body of work on film while TIFF pairs the showcase with other curated events like a Masaaki Yuasa anime series.
