Thuringia Sets No-Confidence Vote as AfD Nominates Höcke to Replace Voigt

The motion proceeds under a secret ballot that requires 45 votes to elect a successor.

Overview

  • Lawmakers will vote Wednesday at 14:00 in Erfurt, with the AfD’s motion placed as the first agenda item.
  • Under Article 73 of the state constitution, the Landtag can express no confidence only by electing a successor, and only Björn Höcke appears on the ballot.
  • Höcke needs 45 of 88 votes but the AfD controls 32 seats, and leaders of CDU, SPD, Linke and BSW have publicly ruled out supporting him.
  • TU Chemnitz has decided to revoke Mario Voigt’s doctorate, and Voigt has announced legal action while the title can be used until a final ruling.
  • Höcke is a legally convicted figure over use of a banned SA slogan and the Thuringian AfD is monitored as right‑wing extremist, and a similar 2021 AfD attempt with Höcke failed.
