Three-Year-Old Killed by Dumper at Bhiwandi Dumping Ground

The death exposed persistent safety gaps at the Chavindra–Ramnagar waste site and triggered violent protests, compensation demands and a police criminal inquiry.

Overview

  • The child, identified as three-year-old Shanaya Abdul Haq, was run over by a reversing municipal dumper and was declared dead on arrival at Indira Gandhi Memorial Sub-District Hospital on Saturday.
  • Angry residents stormed the dumping-ground office, vandalised property and set the dumper and cabins on fire before police and emergency teams restored control of the site.
  • Bhiwandi Taluka Police have opened an investigation, are registering a case against the dumper driver for rash and negligent driving causing death, and are also probing the vandalism using CCTV and witness accounts.
  • Local corporators and residents demanded criminal action, financial compensation for the family, and concrete safety fixes such as better barricading, traffic management and vehicle inspections at the dumping ground.
  • The site regularly sees heavy waste vehicles operating close to homes and workplaces, and officials warned this accident could prompt vehicle audits, tighter licensing and further legal action over unfit or unregistered dumpers.
