Three Teenagers Drown in Separate Mumbai Water Bodies

Investigations will examine how the teenagers accessed the open tanks.

Overview

  • Two boys aged about 13 and 15 drowned after entering a large water tank at a cattle shed in Aarey Colony and were declared brought dead at Trauma Care Hospital on Friday, August 21.
  • A 19-year-old, identified as Shekhar Harish Rawal, drowned while swimming in the Banganga tank in Walkeshwar and was declared dead at Elizabeth Hospital after rescue attempts.
  • Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, 108 ambulance services and ward staff responded to the rescue operations in both incidents.
  • Police have opened probes into how the teenagers reached the hazardous open water bodies and are investigating conflicting early reports about the victims’ identities and the alleged role of a third friend in the Aarey case.
  • The deaths have raised public-safety concerns about unsecured tanks and temple reservoirs in populated neighborhoods and are likely to prompt civic follow-up and stricter checks on access to such water bodies.
