Three Quakes Strike Peru as 4.9 Tremor Hits Off Trujillo

Peru’s monitoring agencies say the cluster highlights ongoing seismic risk.

Overview

  • A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck 78 kilometers west of Trujillo at 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, with a depth of 41 kilometers and was felt at intensity IV in the city while the navy reported no tsunami alert.
  • The largest event in the sequence was a 5.1-magnitude quake 20 kilometers north of Pucallpa on Wednesday, June 3, recorded at 170 kilometers depth and felt lightly in Ucayali with no immediate reports of damage.
  • Earlier on Tuesday, June 2, a magnitude 4.0 tremor occurred 20 kilometers north of Zorritos, Tumbes, at 46 kilometers depth and authorities did not report casualties or material losses.
  • The Instituto Geofísico del Perú, the national seismic center and emergency agencies are maintaining real-time monitoring and have not recorded injuries or structural damage so far while urging citizens to follow official guidance.
  • IGP officials led by Hernando Tavera stressed that earthquakes cannot be precisely predicted, that deeper quakes tend to be felt less at the surface, and that adherence to building standards, emergency kits and drills are the best ways to reduce harm.
