Three Palestine Action Protesters Jailed Over Shipley Arms Site Break-In

The judge said the court punishes criminal damage rather than political belief.

Overview

  • Bradford Crown Court jailed Najam Saeed Shah, Daniel Jones and Julian Gao for 20 months, with up to half to be served in custody and the rest on licence, and ordered their tools destroyed.
  • A jury in February found the four guilty of criminal damage and of possessing items to cause damage, including sledgehammers, crowbars and an adapted fire extinguisher.
  • In April 2024, the group cut through a fence at the Teledyne arms site in Shipley, climbed onto the roof and spent about 16 hours smashing tiles and windows during a protest.
  • The attack caused more than £571,000 in damage, added a notional £23,000 in emergency service costs and shut the site for a week, affecting about 100 employees.
  • West Yorkshire Police and the CPS welcomed the prison terms and said lawful protest does not excuse crimes, while co-defendant Ruby Hamill remains at large under an arrest warrant.
