Three Men Sentenced to 47 Months in Drents Museum Heist Case

The verdict closes a 16-month probe while leaving one gold bracelet missing and raising questions about plea deals, investigative methods and a multimillion-euro insurance payout.

Overview

  • On January 25, 2025 thieves blasted into the Drents Museum in Assen and stole the Coțofenești helmet and three Dacian gold spiral bracelets loaned from Romania.
  • Dutch police arrested three suspects soon after the theft and two of the men returned the slightly dented helmet and two bracelets in April 2026 under plea agreements.
  • This week Dutch courts convicted the three men and sentenced each to 47 months in prison, a term notable because typical sentences in the Netherlands are much shorter.
  • Prosecutors had sought a longer sentence for one defendant who rejected the plea deal, and reporting says aggressive interrogation and privacy breaches complicated evidence and sentencing choices.
  • The case has strained Dutch–Romanian ties, prompted the firing of Romania’s national museum director, left at least one bracelet missing, and left open disputes over who paid roughly €5.7 million in insurance money and whether any of it will be returned.
