Overview
- Early on Saturday, police attended a Gymea Bay home for a welfare check and a 42-year-old man left in a white Audi before officers could speak to him; minutes later that vehicle crashed on Rocky Point Road in Sans Souci and three people died.
- Officers found the Audi rolled over a concrete dividing barrier and resting on top of a blue Toyota sedan, one car caught fire, and between 20 and 40 bystanders and first responders tried to help at the scene.
- The Audi driver, a 42-year-old man, and the driver and passenger of the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators have not yet formally identified the two Toyota occupants.
- NSW Police and the Crash Investigation Unit have established a crime scene, will prepare a coroner’s report, and are treating speed plus possible drug or alcohol impairment as key lines of inquiry while appealing for CCTV, dashcam or phone footage via Crime Stoppers.
- The crash has left grieving families and prompted local calls for safety measures on the road as authorities complete forensic examinations and piece together the vehicle movements and causes leading to the collision.
