Three Irish Tourists Killed as Car Plunges Down Embankment on A-7 Near Málaga

Spanish police are extracting vehicle data and seeking judicial authorisation for tests to establish whether loss of control, speed, mechanical failure or impairment caused the crash.

Overview

  • The crash, which happened early on Sunday, saw a car involved in a two-vehicle collision leave the Almería-bound A-7 near the Cerrado de Calderón exit and fall roughly 30 metres down an embankment, killing three occupants at the scene.
  • A fourth occupant, the 31-year-old Irish driver, was taken to Carlos Haya Hospital in very serious condition and remains hospitalised while authorities continue their probe.
  • Firefighters, the Guardia Civil, local police and medical teams freed trapped people at the scene, treated a 64-year-old woman from the other vehicle for minor injuries and reopened the road after clearing wreckage and fallen trees.
  • Investigators say the collision may have followed a loss of control and are extracting technical data from the crash vehicle while a local court may be asked to authorise blood toxicology tests and to interview the woman who drove the other car.
  • Local reporting has identified the victims as people from Mullingar in Co Westmeath, Irish consular teams are assisting grieving families who are travelling to Málaga, and officials stress the formal cause of the crash remains under judicial investigation.
