Three Hyderabad Men Drown in Godavari at Basar
State and national disaster teams are searching after police said a strong undercurrent swept the men away while they tried to rescue one another.
Overview
- Police identified the victims as Chandrashekhar (38), Ramachander/Ramchandar (36) and Mallesh Kumar (31), who traveled from Chappal Bazar in Kacheguda to Basar for a pilgrimage and went missing after taking a holy dip on Tuesday.
- Authorities say the trio were swept away by a strong undercurrent while attempting to save one another and that the incident occurred in the Godavari near the Gnana Saraswati temple.
- Search-and-recovery operations were launched immediately and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force are on site to locate and retrieve the bodies.
- Police notified the family by phone and relatives were traveling to Basar while local reports described the scene as ongoing and said formal recovery and confirmation of deaths remain pending.
- Basar is a busy pilgrimage spot where river currents can be hazardous, and this case could prompt stepped-up river safety warnings and stronger on-site rescue arrangements for future temple visitors.
