Three Hikers Die From Apparent Heat Illness in Grand Canyon

Extreme midday temperatures with a continuing heat forecast have raised the risk to hikers on Inner Canyon trails.

Overview

  • The National Park Service confirmed Friday that three people died from apparent heat-related illness during two incidents on June 12 and June 16 on Inner Canyon trails.
  • Park rescue teams, including aerial support, responded to calls on the South Kaibab and North Kaibab trails but found the hikers dead when help arrived.
  • Those three deaths follow an earlier suspected heat fatality on June 3, bringing the month's suspected heat deaths at the park to four.
  • All three bodies were taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner and official investigations are ongoing while the park has withheld names pending next-of-kin notification.
  • Officials and the National Weather Service have issued urgent warnings that Inner Canyon shade temperatures can top 109°F and are advising visitors to avoid strenuous hikes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
