Three Family Members Recovered After Car Pulled From Seekonk River

The vehicle's recovery indicates all three occupants remained inside with dive teams continuing identification and recovery work under hazardous underwater conditions.

Overview

  • A car went into the Seekonk River near the Taft Street boat ramp shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, and family members later said the trip was a driving lesson for a 19-year-old.
  • A bystander on a jet ski attempted to help and another witness called 911, and first responders arrived at the scene within about three minutes of the call.
  • Search and recovery operations resumed the next day with Pawtucket police, Pawtucket fire, Rhode Island State Police and other state agencies coordinating dive and crane teams.
  • Dive teams reported extremely strong currents and very poor underwater visibility, conditions that complicated the recovery of the submerged vehicle on Monday.
  • Pawtucket police confirmed a dive team recovered the vehicle and the three occupants, relatives publicly identified the victims as Floridalma, 45, Nora, 19, and a 2-year-old granddaughter named Ana, and authorities are continuing formal identification and asking for privacy.
