Three Deaths Confirmed at Burning Man 2026

Autopsy and toxicology results, expected in six to eight weeks, will determine causes for the three deaths.

Overview

  • Officials have identified the three victims as Sampson Tshombe, found Sept. 3 after a medical emergency, Armando Ramirez, who died en route to a Reno hospital on Sept. 4, and Craig Mann, found in his trailer on Sept. 5.
  • Local authorities say preliminary examinations show no signs of foul play and they do not believe the cases are linked.
  • Pershing County and the Washoe County medical examiner have opened cases and said autopsy and toxicology testing could take six to eight weeks to complete.
  • Burning Man Project posted condolence statements and kept on-site crisis and peer-support services available as volunteer medical teams and Black Rock Rangers handled a higher-than-normal volume of emergencies.
  • The festival ran Aug. 30–Sept. 7 and officials note three deaths is unusually high compared with the typical average of one death per year, a fact that will likely prompt post-event reviews of medical capacity and safety protocols.
