Overview
- Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed a third flood-related death Friday and said a person was swept away while driving through high water on Monday in Val Verde County.
- State and local teams have mounted large rescue efforts and have rescued more than 500 people while deploying roughly 2,700 personnel, about 1,400 vehicles, dozens of boats and aircraft to affected areas.
- Officials report more than 700 homes affected so far with localized tallies of 48 homes in Cotulla, 28 in Dimmit County and one in McMullen County, and they expect those counts to rise as floodwaters recede and evaluators reach inaccessible sites.
- The Nueces River crested at about 29 feet in Cotulla and, although levels there have begun to fall, the surge is moving south and flood forecasts show continued rises into early August near reservoirs such as Lake Corpus Christi.
- Local leaders and emergency teams credit door-to-door warnings and early evacuations in places like La Salle County with preventing additional deaths while the governor has declared disasters for 59 counties and requested federal aid for 33 counties.
