Three Dead After HRTC Bus Plunges Into Uttarakhand Gorge

Officials have opened an inquiry, with cross-border treatment and possible airlifts arranged.

Overview

  • Uttarakhand’s SDRF, police and local residents carried out a large-scale rescue after the bus fell nearly 100 meters near Kuanu on the Meenak/Minus Road in the Kalsi area.
  • Authorities said the Himachal Roadways bus was on the NerwaPaonta Sahib route with about 36 people on board when it went out of control near Chakrata.
  • Three passengers were confirmed dead — identified as Yasmin Begum, Richa and Dhan Bahadur — and more than a dozen others were injured, with at least 10 reported seriously hurt.
  • Police registered a case as investigators examine preliminary accounts that the driver lost control during an overtaking attempt or after an embankment gave way.
  • Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the injured at Doon Hospital, and Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed officials to assist families and prepare helicopter transfers if required.
