Three Dead After Flash Floods on Navajo Nation

Forecasters linked the fatalities to an unusually strong late‑season moisture surge that kept flood risk high across the Four Corners.

Overview

  • Tribal police responded to reports of people swept away and recovered two adults and one juvenile who were pronounced dead near Newcomb on Sept. 16.
  • Navajo Nation search-and-rescue teams, fire and EMS crews, community volunteers and K-9 units conducted overnight operations and have completed initial search efforts while the deaths remain under investigation.
  • The floods damaged roads, washed out stretches of U.S. Highway 191 and forced school closures, local evacuations and road repairs in multiple communities on the reservation.
  • The National Weather Service and the Weather Prediction Center said a late‑season surge of subtropical moisture produced near‑record mid‑September precipitable water and intense downpours that can cause rapid runoff in dry washes and narrow canyons.
  • The Navajo Nation has reaffirmed a reservation‑wide state of emergency as officials continue damage assessments and warn that localized heavy rain and runoff risks persist in parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado.
