Overview
- A Durban High Court jury and judge found Sayefudeen del Vecchio, Fatima (Bibi) Patel and Musa Jackson guilty of kidnapping, robbery and the February 2018 double murders of Dr Rodney and Dr Rachel Saunders following a lengthy trial in June 2026.
- Prosecutors told the court that the couple were ambushed while collecting seeds in the Ongoye Forest, their bodies were dumped from the Tugela River Bridge and later washed ashore in a degraded state that required DNA and dental analysis to confirm identity.
- Investigators traced card and phone transactions showing the accused accessed the Saunderses' banking apps and cards and withdrew and spent roughly R700,000, evidence that helped link the defendants to the crime.
- Police recovered ISIS-related material in del Vecchio’s home and had placed the suspects on a watchlist, but prosecutors did not bring formal terrorism charges in the trial.
- Sentencing was postponed and set for February 2027; the convictions close an eight-year investigation that drew international attention and will bring a mandatory life sentence risk for the defendants under South African law while the Saunders family continues to seek closure.
