Overview
- A private 25-foot boat was overwhelmed by a fast-moving storm on Friday when downburst winds and large waves caused it to take on water, roll, capsize and sink.
- First responders rescued seven people from the water, and divers later located the sunken vessel in about 32 feet of water and recovered three children ages 10, 7 and 6 who were later pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts.
- Investigators say the boat was operated by a 47-year-old with extensive experience who turned the vessel into the wind as conditions worsened, and that all juveniles on board were wearing properly fitted life jackets.
- Preliminary medical information indicates the children suffered no external injuries and that drowning in freshwater is the likely cause of death, while the National Weather Service says peak winds reached an estimated 90 to 100 mph and downed hundreds of trees.
- Two of the victims have been publicly identified by family members through a GoFundMe, memorial funds and school statements are being organized, and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency with support from the Wisconsin DNR continues an active investigation as the community cleans up storm damage.
