Three Bank of India Employees Arrested After 96 Packets of Pledged Gold Vanish

The loss exposed failures in the branch’s dual-key vault controls, prompting police raids to recover jewellery and a criminal probe for breach of trust.

Overview

  • Police arrested branch manager Sandeep Yadav and two staff officers after an Agra regional team found 96 packets of pledged gold missing from the Bank of India branch in Bharaul.
  • Bank officials said the credit officer who held one of the vault keys had been absent since May 27, and on June 15 investigators used a duplicate key under CCTV to open the vault and verify the missing packets.
  • An FIR was filed at Araon police station by the bank’s regional office and the accused were booked for criminal breach of trust, stolen property and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • Police recovered a gold waist ornament and a pair of bracelets from those arrested, but most of the 96 packets remain unaccounted for and the FIR does not list the total weight or value of the missing gold.
  • Investigators are conducting raids and questioning associates to trace the jewellery, while customers face uncertainty about restitution and the case raises questions about dual-key custody and branch controls.
