Three-Alarm Fire in Midtown Manhattan Hits Building Under Renovation

Renovation-created holes accelerated the blaze’s spread, likely triggering FDNY and city inspections.

Overview

  • More than 300 firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire that began on the second floor of a multi-occupancy building on Seventh Avenue and spread to the third before being reported under control by about 6 a.m.
  • FDNY crews attacked the blaze from inside and from ladder trucks on the roof as several windows blew out and crews worked around large openings created by renovation work.
  • Assistant Chief Mike Myers said holes in floors and the roof and other pathways from renovation made the operation more hazardous and helped the fire move between floors.
  • One firefighter suffered minor injuries after falling through a floor and another person was hurt but declined treatment, and FDNY fire marshals are conducting a post-fire investigation into the cause.
  • Following an earlier deadly Sunnyside fire in June, city officials may step up Department of Buildings inspections, consider vacate orders for unsafe sites, and expand tenant aid and sheltering if enforcement identifies more at-risk renovation conditions.
