Three 14-Year-Olds Charged After Baltimore Officer Is Hit by Stolen Car and Fires One Shot

SIRT has opened an investigation into the shooting.

Overview

  • Body-camera video shows a Kia reversing into Officer William Cole, who fires once as he falls, and the car fleeing after hitting multiple vehicles; despite a second loud report on the video, police say Cole’s weapon discharged only one round.
  • Police say the encounter began at 12:05 a.m. on Feb. 15 on the 800 block of West Lombard Street during a response to a reported attempted home break-in.
  • Cole sustained an ankle injury, received hospital treatment, and was released shortly after.
  • Officers later found the Kia abandoned on South Arlington Avenue and confirmed it had been reported stolen on Feb. 14 from East Chase Street.
  • Two 14-year-old boys identified through ankle monitors were arrested on Feb. 16 and detained, and a 14-year-old girl identified as the driver was arrested on Feb. 17, treated earlier for a wrist wound that detectives say may be a gunshot graze, and released on electronic monitoring.
