Third Translocated Tigress Released in Sahyadri as Tiger Count Reaches Six

The move is part of Maharashtra’s TARA programme to seed a breeding population in the KoynaChandoli landscape under intensive radio monitoring.

Overview

  • Captured on February 5 in the Nagalwadi range of Pench Tiger Reserve, the tigress was moved by road and then by boat to Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary late Friday.
  • Veterinary officers cleared her for release after a health check, noting she drank water and ate meat, and she entered the core forest on Saturday morning.
  • Previously identified as PTR-123, she has been renumbered STR-06 and is being referred to locally as Hirkani.
  • Officials fitted a radio collar for round-the-clock satellite and VHF tracking, with field triangulation, behaviour documentation, conflict-avoidance protocols and veterinary readiness in place.
  • With STR-06 in place, Sahyadri now holds three males and three females, and officials say she is expected to pair with resident male STR-03 (Baji), potentially supporting population growth and tourism.
