Overview
- Racecourse staff discovered that intruders broke in at about 3.30am on Saturday and stole a Polaris all-terrain vehicle from Redcar Racecourse.
- The thieves exited along the straight and caused running-rail damage that required extra staff and immediate repairs to make the course ready for the bank-holiday meeting.
- Racecourse management say the raid was targeted after burglars cut power to an alarm, and Cleveland Police are investigating the incident.
- Organisers appealed for CCTV footage and witnesses and confirmed the Zetland Gold Cup on Monday and racing on Tuesday will go ahead as planned.
- The stolen ATV is used to transport water to the start and move equipment, replacement cost is put at more than £12,000, and the loss could create short-term logistical strain on raceday operations.
