The Mandalorian and Grogu Marks Star Wars' Return to Theaters

Lucasfilm built the film for IMAX-sized spectacle to bring streaming-born characters back to cinemas for a new generation.

Overview

  • The movie opens in Latin America on May 21 and in the United States and Canada on May 22, 2026, as the first theatrical Star Wars release since Rogue One.
  • Jon Favreau directed and co-wrote the film with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, and the cast includes Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, Grogu, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White and a voice role for Martin Scorsese.
  • Production emphasized large-format craft with IMAX framing, extensive physical sets, miniatures and stop-motion alongside ILM visual effects to justify a cinema presentation.
  • Composer Ludwig Göransson expanded the score with a larger orchestra and a 64-person choir to deliver a more cinematic sound while Favreau says the film was made to work for viewers who have never seen the series.
  • Disney has not announced a Disney+ date and industry estimates place a likely theatrical-to-streaming window near 100 to 136 days, which would put a possible streaming debut in late August or early September 2026 but remains unconfirmed.
