Thai Consumer Watchdog to Sue Meta Over Facebook Scam Ads

The suit seeks to force stronger ad safeguards on Facebook to raise Thailand's digital consumer-protection standards.

Overview

  • Thailand's Consumer Council, which announced the move on Thursday, plans to file a civil lawsuit on June 8 against Meta for allegedly allowing scam adverts that defrauded users.
  • The council logged 3,793 complaints linked to Facebook between 2024 and 2026 that include non-delivery of goods, fake investment schemes, impersonation and misleading pages in a market with about 51 million Facebook users.
  • The watchdog says it spent more than a year asking Meta's global and local teams to block fraudulent ads before deciding to sue because it found the platform's responses insufficient.
  • Meta has previously said it invests in tools to detect and remove scam content and works with regulators and law enforcement, but the company did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on the planned Thai case.
  • If the suit proceeds it could push regional legal standards for platform accountability, may change how Facebook vets advertisers in Southeast Asia and offers a path for affected consumers to seek compensation.
